The Austen Bioskills Lab is named in honor of Dr. W. Gerald Austen, an Akron native, and his wife, Patricia. A graduate of MIT and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Austen began his distinguished career in developing a world-class cardiac surgical program at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he served as chief of surgery for 29 years.
A member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Austen has served as a visiting professor at more than 50 medical centers worldwide and as president of a host of national medical societies.
An internationally recognized heart surgeon, he has authored or co-authored more than 400 original articles, 51 chapters and 4 textbooks. Dr. Austen is a life member of the Corporation of MIT.
